Burned at the stake with a radio on
the news and the weather in a savage tongue
and she cried and she screamed "there is no in between to be found"

The babies all grow with their mouths open wide
waiting for the breast or the spoon to arrive
but it ends just the way that the movies proclaimed that it would
The hungry and weak, their fevers do peak as they should

and the sun goes down

A prophet of old in a garment of white
He interprets dreams with a gun at his side
and the mockers and scoffers, the dirty mouth talkers believe

A drunken salesman on a tv screen
says the devil is red and the sky is green
and the money rolls in and his book signing pen runs dry
while the groom goes to kiss his brides red lips but she denies

and the sun goes down

coyotes in the cornfields with their blood covered mouths
The hierarchy crumbles at the sound of their howl
The wild and free lick their bodies all clean from the dirt

You wrestled with god and bound him in chains.
But he laughs at your weakness and he won't change your name
So you call yourself king and the people do sing out of key
And the old man in chains is taken and laid out to sea.

The youth all march to the center of town
their faces all painted with the truth they've found
but the riot squad aims and the parents don't say a word

The articulate fools with their golden pens
They document the world and how it shall end
In a glorious light of freedom and might overhead
and our lungs take in the ash on the winds of change
